Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI)
"In response to the diabetes epidemic among AI/AN people, Congress established the SDPI in 1997. The SDPI provides funds for diabetes treatment and prevention services to IHS, Tribal, and Urban Indian communities across the United States. As a result, AI/AN communities now have much needed diabetes resources and increased access to quality diabetes care."
More information about the SDPI program can be found at the link below.
Meet Our SDPI Wellness Team Consisting of a Community Health Educator, a Public Health Nurse, and a Diabetic Wellness Nurse, this dedicated team collaborates closely with our diabetic patients, as well as individuals who may be at risk. Together, they work closely providing community support while promoting educational opportunities and preventive practices. Additionally, a Dietitian is accessible to all patients within this program, offering nutritional guidance as a proactive health strategy.

Our SDPI Wellness Team brings a variety of programs, challenges and events to the Tribal Health Center, including;
- Wicozani Gathering (Tuesday 9AM to 11:30AM) - A weekly clinic offering health screenings, education and resource for diabetes and other chronic illness. Each gathering ends with a delicious, healthy meal, snack or drink to enjoy (recipes available.)
- Seasons on Wellness (Thursday 10AM to 11AM) - A weekly educational class for adults and children. Each hourly session includes seasonal garden and food skills + wellness education. Mni (water) and sunscreen available to all participants.
- Wellness Challenge (Monthly) - Each month our team “challenges” you to feel your best! A new challenge is unveiled monthly with a calendar style tracker to record your progress. Prizes are awarded, but more importantly, each challenge is designed to create a positive effect on your overall health and wellbeing (Wicozani)!
- Health Education - Each month a different health awareness is highlighted to bring education and awareness to the topic. Community Health Events are tailored to the time of year, event topic and community input!
- Walk/Run 1-2-3 Miles (Quarterly) - Four times a year, on a Saturday, we host a community walk/run to encourage outdoor movement, community togetherness and health awareness. Months may vary throughout the year, with the exception of our annual Wacipi Walk/Run that takes place every 3rd Saturday in July, during the annual Flandreau Wacipi that is held every 3rd weekend of July!
- Oyaté Owōžu Kiŋ “The People’s Garden” and “Bountiful Basket” (Seasonal) - “The People’s Garden” is just that, while the garden is planted and maintained by our SDPI Wellness Team and other Tribal Health Center employees, it is always open to community involvement! Through “Bountiful Basket” each harvest is placed in our lobby and available for all (bags provided) throughout the growing season!
- Wellness Walks - "Wellness Walks" is a new program set to begin on July 6th! This will be a structured walking program open to all, stop by at 9AM on Monday, July 6th, to find out more. "Let's walk together towards better health!"
Wicozani Wellness Points System - All patients at the Tribal Health Center can earn "Wicozani Wellness Points" by participating in any of the programs and events listed above! Additionally, points can be accumulated by meeting care standards and actively managing your health throughout the year. These points can be redeemed for the following items, each designed to enhance overall health and wellness.
